The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind is one of my favourite games to date. Huge gameworld where you can go where you want to and do what you want to. Don't feel like completing the main quest? Then don't. Want to kill everyone on the island? Go right ahead. Of course, there are consequences to your actions.
It's set on the island of Vvardenfell, a large volcanic subcontinent of the Morrowind province, home of the Dunmer (aka Dark Elves). The volcano, Red Mountain, is located in the centre of the island, and regularly spews ash up into the air. Lately, the entire island has been plagued with the Blight, turning the animals mad and making the inhabitants quite sick. Then there's the matter of Corprus, which turns men and elves into deformed, deranged lunatics. And then there are rumours of something even worse about to happen. Naturally, it's your job to go and fix all this. You start out in the swamp village of Seyda Neen, being released from an Imperial prison ship for some reason. You are then told to go to Balmora and speak with Caius Cosades in the nearby town of Balmora. And that's where your involvement in everything begins.
One of the best features of Morrowind is the Construction Set, a world editor where you can change practically everything about the game and save it as a plugin. There are a huge number of plugins available for the game, nearly all fan-created, at various websites. Some of them are excellent additions to the world, others are incredibly useful utilities that make so much sense you wonder how you got along without them in the first place, others are for pure powergaming.
Many of the larger plugins have teams assembled to create them. I'm part of one such team; we are expanding the Dwemer (an extinct elven race, central to the main quest and several side-quests) ruins of Vvardenfell to be the huge underground cities they were meant to be. It's quite a task - anyone who's played Morrowind for a decent length of time and explored these ruins could probably add a convincing new Dwemer ruin, but we're trying to make them all unique. I'm working on the Aleft ruin right now, and will start on the Bthuand ruin once I am done. Our project is called Greater Dwemer Ruins, or GDR for short. Its homepage can be found here; I've also a page about my own end of the project, with screenshots, here.
This page lists and links to the projects on which I am working (GDR, Dwemer language, FoA). Also, see the links page for many sites devoted to Morrowind.
